MADILL, Oklahoma -- Madill Wildcats wide receiver Kevin Roberts gets overshadowed both literally and figuratively. At 5’8” 170-pounds he is usually one of the smaller players on the field. But despite his little stature, Roberts has made more than his share of big plays. The wide-out ranks in the top three in Class 3A in most major receiving categories and now big time colleges are starting to take notice.

“Texas Tech is really interested in me because I fit their system,” Roberts said. “What my dad [Madill head coach Kerry Roberts] told me was that the D-1’s that have been recruiting me, I’ve moved up on their board. I’m in the middle now is what their saying, so if one of the top guys drop off then I’ll get a scholarship.”

Roberts said he has heard from Tulsa, TCU, and Kansas as well. He has several small school offers but none from the Division 1 level. A big reason why is his lack of size, which the senior says is his biggest obstacle in recruiting.

“I’m like ‘God please just give me 5’10”, 5’11”,’” Roberts said. “Let me go on a growth spurt and I’ll be good to go. But you got to work with what you got.”

While Roberts is one of the Wildcats big three, most colleges are after running back Darryl Fields, who is rated as one of the 10 best players in Oklahoma by several services. Even though most schools go to Madill to check out Fields, many recruiters like what else they see on the field.

“I forgot the college, but I had a pretty big game, and they came in and told my dad that I was impressive,” Roberts said. “I think it helps me get my name out there more. They’re coming to see him but they see [quarterback] Spencer [Bond] and me. You get people who weren’t looking at you to start looking at you because they’re there to see Darryl.”

Roberts wants to be a pharmacist and said that a school’s pharmacy program will be one factor in his decision. But both he and Fields say they will not make a decision until after the season.
