Class 2A’s road to the gold ball continues with round two play this week. Below are three matchups that will be good games, but perhaps more importantly, these games will have big implications moving forward.

Washington at Crooked Oak: The Washington Warriors enter round two with a big opening round win under their belt. The Warriors beat Tishomingo 55-23.
Although Washington (8-3) enters the matchup with Crooked Oak (6-5) with the better record, Crooked Oak has huge momentum entering Friday’s game. The Ruf-Nex beat 2A-1 district champion Watonga 46-34. Another factor is location. Friday’s game is at Crooked Oak which gives the Ruf-Nex a great advantage over Washington. I expect a battle for every possession and whoever can play the best fundamental football and force turnovers will come out on top.

Jones at Davis: Only one loss separates these two teams entering round two. Jones (9-2) will have to be on top of their game as they are on the road at Davis (9-1). Since beginning district play, the Davis Wolves have outscored their opponents by a total of 343-41. The Wolves will need continued great play from guys like Cole Weber, who is averaging 11 points per game, while the Longhorns will look to players like Kris Vaughn who averages 75.8 rushing yards per game and Tylor Seabolt who has 56 catches for 1110 yards this year. This should make for interesting and touch matchup for both teams.

Hennessey at Lindsay: These two teams both enter this matchup at 8-3 on the season. So far this season Lindsay has outscored opponents 494-313 while Hennessey outscored their opposition by a total of 370-122. This is where a key difference comes between these two teams. The Hennessey Eagles are averaging 33.6 points per game while the Leopards average 44.9 points per contest. Yes, these are just averages, but that’s a difference of 11.3 points per game! The fact that the game is at Lindsay could be a huge help for the Leopards, but they have to control Hennessey’s run game. The Eagles currently average 268.8 yards on the ground per game so effectively limiting the run game will be a key to Hennessey’s success.
