STILLWATER, Oklahoma -- The Hennessey Eagles (12-3) left the windy conditions of Boone Pickens Stadium Saturday with their first-ever Gold Ball with a 14-0 win over the Davis Wolves (12-2).

“It’s huge,” Hennessey coach Shannon Watford said. “Like I told the kids, ‘It goes in the history books.’”

The Eagles’ defense wasn’t fooled by the Wolves’ wishbone offense, holding them to only 101 total yards and scoreless all four quarters. The Davis offense was shut down, coming into the state championship game averaging more than 330 yards on the ground per game, but managing only 59 against the Eagles defense.

“That’s what we pride ourselves in and we told them, ‘Here’s the deal, if they can’t score, they can’t win,’” Watford said. “They just did a really good job. I’m just really proud.”

Junior quarterback Trey Leu’s job was made a lot easier with his team’s defensive dominance. The defense held Davis to only one first down in the first half. Overall, the Wolves finished with only 101 total yards, while the Eagles finished with 309.

“Defensively, we had a lot of kids step up,” Leu said. “Overall, we just shut their offense down. We knew what we needed to do coming in and we did it. We executed to the fullest.”

Leu rushed for 59 yards and one touchdown, which came late in the game. His fourth quarter score came after rushing on three consecutive plays, running in the touchdown on a quarterback sneak to make it a 14-0 game. He completed eight of his 14 passes for 100 yards.

“This is just an overwhelming feeling. This is just unbelievable,” Leu said. “We’ve worked so hard and we put in so time and effort and we finally came out victorious. We finally came out with that Gold Ball.”

Hennessey’s offensive line also provided some big plays, opening up holes for both Eagles running backs sophomore Levi Hill and junior Ivan Moreno. The first touchdown came on the first drive of the game when Moreno put the Eagles up.

Moreno finished the game with 142 yards on 29 carries, including his first quarter TD.

“It feels amazing,” Moreno said. “Nobody really believed us at the beginning of the season, but we got to prove them all wrong.”

The Eagles had critics questioning their presence in the title game, having lost two of their first three games. During their upset over Millwood in the state semifinal game, Hennessey proved hard work can overcome a talented opponent.

“We just played hard,” Watford said. “You don’t have to be the most talented -- we showed that last week. All you have to do is play hard and be tough.

“Good things come to you. We’ve learned to play hard.”

It’s an accomplishment the Eagles will savor, while the Wolves will have to wait another year for a chance at the state title.

“They just whipped us today,” Davis head coach Jody Weber said. “They’re the state champions. They were the better team today?the hurt will wear off and the kids will realize all the good things we accomplished this year. We just didn’t finish the deal.”

Hennessey finished the game not only holding off the Davis offense, not only capitalizing on opportunities offensively, but making history in the four quarters it took to win the Class 2A state title.
