Woodland Wins Defensive Struggle for Class A Title

STILLWATER, Oklahoma – Woodland and Stratford played all of regulation without scoring, but Woodland pulled out a 6-0 victory in overtime to win the Class A state title.

Both defenses played well from start to finish, resulting in zero points through the game’s first 48 minutes. But on the first possession of overtime, Patrick Bartlett came up with the game’s biggest play.

Bartlett stepped in front of a pass for an interception, halting Stratford’s drive and putting Woodland in prime position to win the game. The Cougars took advantage with a touchdown run by Willie Zachary to win the game.

The Cougars finished the season a perfect 14-0 and won their fifth championship in program history, but their first since the school changed its name from Fairfax to Woodland. Saturday’s game also marked the first time a Stratford team has played a championship game in any sport.
