The first week of December brought big action to the hardwood as the Henryetta basketball teams traveled to Checotah and the Wildcats didn’t exactly treat their guests kindly. Checotah won 44-35 and the Lady Cats topped the No. 8 Henryetta Lady Knights 58-46.

The first quarter of the boys game featured a lot of steals and rebounds, but not many points, Checotah led 9-8, but in the second quarter Henryetta rallied back to hold a 16-13 halftime lead.

The third quarter swung back and forth, Henryetta held a 31-27 advantage with 1:59 left, Checotah tied the game at 31-all with a quarter left. The Wildcats went on a 15-0 scoring run, which pretty well doomed Henryetta’s chances, Checotah took the game by a 44-35 score.

Sophomore Damon Mouss and junior Joe Moudy led the Knights’ scoring with ten points each, senior Greg Thomas added six. Sophomores Grant Ward and Blake Johnson each finished with four apiece.

The Lady Knights were in a hole quickly, they trailed 19-15 after eight minutes of play. Despite a poorly played second quarter, they tied the game 25-25 and were only down by two at halftime, 30-28.

The score was knotted again at 34-34, but that was the closest Henryetta ever came to the lead, missed layups and errant 3 pointers kept them back 42-39 after the third quarter, the Lady Cats outplayed them during the stretch, as Checotah handed Henryetta their first loss of the season 58-46. Sophomore Miranda Harjo had 18 points, while Danielle Bear and Ashton Peters had seven each.

After Christmas break, the second half of the season gets underway. January 3-8 the Knights (2-3) will play in the Okemah Tournament, while January 6-8 the Lady Knights (4-1) play at the Tournament of Champions in McAlester.
