OKMULGEE, Oklahoma--Last year, the Dewar Lady Dragons came into the 2011 Creek Nation Okmulgee County Tournament the undefeated No. 1 seed, but lost the championship to Henryetta 56-47.

This year, the 2A No. 8 Lady Dragons were again the No. 1 seed, and they got their revenge on the 3A No. 8 Lady Knights, defeating them 80-69 Saturday night.

Round one was against the Lady Tigers of Wilson and the Lady Dragons held a 15-13 lead after one quarter.

At halftime the game was nearly won as Dewar led 38-19 and the lead grew to 59-23 by the end of the third. The final score was Dewar 82-30.

Cheyenne Been led the scoring attack with 22 points, Ashley Holuby pitched in with 19, Aleia Murphy scored 14 while Starr Simmons added 12 and Crystal Nero and Cheyenne Westmoreland each scored eight.

Snow delayed the tournament for the first time in its nine year history backing up Thursday’s semifinal matchup to Friday night. Early on, Dewar jumped to a 10-3 lead over Okmulgee and the Lady Dragons were ahead 15-7 after eight minutes.

Dewar steadily increased the cushion, leading 30-17 at halftime. Okmulgee went on a 7-0 run, but foul trouble kept the Lady Bulldogs from making any serious headway. With three quarters played, Dewar’s lead was 43-29 and the Lady Dragons punched a ticket to the title game with the 55-45 win. Cheyenne Been scored 15 points and Murphy added 11. Holuby and Nero both added eight while Alesha Hill had seven points on the night.

Henryetta knocked off Morris, so the championship game was a rematch of the previous year between Henryetta and Dewar.

Both teams play similar styles, and with a lot at stake the action was intense. Henryetta got a 9-4 lead early, but after trading baskets, Dewar led 21-19 eight minutes in.

The Lady Dragons led 29-27 halfway through the second quarter and the halftime score was a 37-36 razor-thin edge in Dewar’s favor.

Three point shooting was an important factor in Dewar holding a 58-47 third quarter advantage. Henryetta was forced to foul late in the game and eventually the Lady Dragons earned the title “County’s Best,”as well as some revenge, with a 80-69 victory over the Lady Knights.

Nine of the game’s 15 players scored in double digits, Been piled up 31 points, Holuby scored 14, Simmons added 12, Westmoreland 11 and Murphy had ten points.

For Henryetta, Lauren Flanary led the scoring with 17 points, followed by Miranda Harjo with 13, Danielle Bear and Heather Konsure each added 12 and Megan Tabor scored eight.

Up next for Dewar (16-1) is a trip to Wewoka January 28, the girls tip off at 6:30 p.m., the boys follow at 8 p.m.
