TULSA, Oklahoma – The Booker T. Washington Lady Hornets escaped elimination with a 67-39 win Thursday night. The Edison Lady Eagles’ season ends with the loss.

The Lady Hornets won the game in the first four minutes of the game. Booker T. hit shot after shot, building a 12-0 run to open the game. Edison’s first basket came on a Victoria Thompson jumper with 3:30 to go in the quarter.

Booker T. began the second quarter with a 10 point lead and quickly added to its advantage. Kaylan Mayberry jumped in front of the Lady Eagles’ passes for three big steals and finished the plays with assists or baskets at the other end. The Lady Hornets led 30-18 at halftime.

The Booker T. Washington defense was smothering in the paint. Edison freshman Brooke Garner scored 8 first half points, but nothing came easy for the Lady Eagles’ workhorse. On one pivotal possession in the second quarter, the Lady Hornets blocked three consecutive point-blank shots in the lane to keep its lead at double-digits.

Garner was held to just one point in the second half. The Lady Eagles were led by Thompson and Garner’s 9 points apiece. DeVaughn Gray scored 24 points to lead Booker T. Washington.

The win advances the Lady Hornets to an elimination game against Bishop Kelley on Saturday, March 5th. The Lady Comets lost their first game of the 2010 postseason on Thursday night to East Central. Saturday’s game will tip from Broken Arrow High School at 3 p.m. The winner moves on to the state tournament.
