UNDATED -- Grand River Dam Authority is asking electricity customers to voluntarily curtail electricity use. The combination of the area's record-breaking heat and an outage of one generating unit on Wednesday afternoon led to the appeal.

The request will be in effect until the GRDA announces that the current energy shortage has passed, according to spokesperson Justin Albert.

"Anything the public can do to cut back on consumption is helpful," Albert said.
