STILLWATER, Oklahoma – The Oklahoma State Cowboys held its first practice of the fall Friday and head coach Mike Gundy was impressed with the workout.

"Very pleased with day one. Great effort and commitment today," said Gundy on his Twitter account after practice.

The Cowboys hit the practice field early Friday for a 7:30 a.m. workout.

"It was good to get back out there today," said Gundy. "The guys moved around really well and some of the veteran players made some plays. Brandon (Weeden) threw the ball well. (Justin) Blackmon made some catches. Hubert (Anyiam) made some catches. Defensively, Jamie Blatnick looked good moving around; so did Markelle Martin, Brodrick Brown, Justin Gilbert -- some of the key guys.

Quarterback Brandon Weeden was also happy with the first session, in particular with the receivers saying on his Twitter account, "Solid first practice! Wide Receivers had a great day!"

OSU seemed eager to get started and spent a couple of hours on the practice field diligently running through drills and formations in preparation for the upcoming season.

"We had a nice two-hour, 15-minute practice and I think the guys are in the right frame of mind," Gundy added. "The first few days are always easy, and we're just looking forward to getting back out there tomorrow. It was nice to be on the field and be around the players."

New offensive coordinator Todd Monken also chimed in on the first practice of the season. "It went pretty well for a first workout," he said. "There wasn't much in the way of stupid penalties and busts like you might normally see early in the camp."

Coach Gundy also commented about several of the younger players that caught his eye.

"Mike Mustafa (freshman defensive tackle) played well and Josh Stewart did a nice job on offense," Gundy said. "I thought (true freshman linebacker Ryan) Simmons did a nice job of moving around. I felt Daytawion Lowe - who's not a new guy, but a guy that missed a year - did a nice job moving around. I kind of watch for that and try to get a feel for some of those guys. I thought Herschel (Sims, freshman running back) did a nice job."

OSU will have another early-morning workout on Saturday and will follow that up with Fan Day and Media Day.
