TULSA, Oklahoma -- Tulsa Police are calling August 7 -13 "Stop On Red Week" to remind motorists of the dangers of running red lights.

"Traffic crashes are the single most significant cause of preventable death and injury in North America," said Officer Craig Murray, traffic safety coordinator with the TPD.

"In 2007, almost 900 people in the U.S. were killed and an estimated 153,000 injured in crashes that involved red light running."

Public costs exceed $14 billion a year, and more than half of the deaths in red light running crashes are other motorists and pedestrians, Murray said in a news release.

"The Tulsa Police Department supports the national efforts of Stop On Red Week and will be paying special attention to intersection lights and actively enforcing the laws of the City of Tulsa on motorists that run red lights," he said.
