EDMOND, Oklahoma -- People were sifting through the ashes in Edmond Sunday, one day after a wildfire re-ignited, destroying more than a dozen homes.

The fire was still smoldering Sunday evening with charred lawns and destroyed homes in the background.

"The devastation is just tremendous," said homeowner Jack Mills.

Others reflected on how close they came to being seriously injured or killed.

"It was crazy because I almost got stuck [in my home]," said one resident.

No one was seriously injured or died from the fire, but there was damage as far as the eye could see.

"[I] saw orange flames as tall as my trees," recalled Jade McGlothlin, whose house was sparred by mere feet.

In all, the fire destroyed 13 homes including seven houses and six mobile homes.

Those with electricity on Sunday were watering their parched lawns just in case. They know Saturday's fire was just as unpredictable as the winds leaving some homes completely untouched, while leveling homes of the neighbors on either side.

"I was pleasantly surprised when I saw that I had a house today," said McGlothlin. "I wasn't expecting it. I thought the whole neighborhood was going to be gone."

McGlothlin says there was no time to think about what to do, she just sprung into action.  "I threw all the animals in the car … and my son, and we made it out."

Mills saw the destruction for the first time Sunday morning.  "It leaves a huge pit in the bottom of your stomach," he said.

But, although there is loss, people like Mills say there was one remarkable thing to come from such devastation.  "Our lives were spared and we're extremely blessed."

McGlothlin shared the same thought.  "I'm just so thankful that everybody got out alive with all their pets," she said.

Saturday's fire started on Thursday just west of the hard-hit neighborhood. Firefighters had been monitoring the situation since Thursday, but they couldn't prevent the fire from re-igniting.

The Red Cross is assisting those affected by the fire.  Those who need assistance can call 405-228-9500.
