NORMAN, Oklahoma – University of Oklahoma defensive end Ronnell Lewis was not at practice Thursday for what head coach Bob Stoops says is a "personal matter."

"He just has some personal matters he's tending to, which we're in support of," said Stoops. "Once those are taken care of, we'll see."

Thursday morning the Sooners held its second closed scrimmage of the season after finishing two-a-days practice the day before.

Although it has still not been determined if Lewis is academically eligible to play this season for the Sooners, his absence from practice was said to be due to the personal issue Lewis is going through.

Lewis has struggled with his academic eligibility and even though summer classes ended nearly two weeks ago, his eligibility still hasn't been decided.

But Lewis isn't the only one. Trey Metoyer is also waiting on the final decision as to whether or not he is eligible to play this season for the Sooners. Metoyer, a freshman wide receiver from Whitehouse, Texas, orally committed to OU before his senior season.

"As far as I understand today, it's still not totally resolved," said Stoops on Thursday after practice.

Lewis, a native of Dewar, Okla., recorded 27 tackles last season for OU, five of them for a loss, while Metoyer caught 108 passes for 1,540 yards and 23 touchdowns his senior year of high school.

The Sooners return to the practice field Friday before classes begin Monday, Aug. 22.

Oklahoma opens the season Sept. 3 against the University of Tulsa at 7 p.m.
