OKLAHOMA CITY -- As ceremonies were held in New York City and around the United States, Oklahomans remembered September 11 as well.

In fact, at Southern Hills Baptist Church in Oklahoma City, the congregation not only remembered those lost on that fateful day, but they also paid tribute to the first responders here in the metro that continue to serve and protect the community today.

"We don't get thanked very often because we find people in the worst possible moments of their life," said Cpt. Susie Patterson, an Oklahoma City Paramedic. "It's all about their problems and pain and we help them as much as we can."

And even though the first responders in attendance appreciated the gesture, the job at hand is what keeps them going.

"We don't mind not being honored because we don't do it to be in the spotlight, in that way," said Maj. Tony Tompkins, an Oklahoma City firefighter. "I want to make a difference in the world and that's what keeps me coming back to work everyday."
