Oklahoma Parents Encouraged To Read To Their Kids

OKLAHOMA CITY -- It's Early Childhood Awareness Week in Oklahoma, and Governor Mary Fallin is focusing on the importance of childhood literacy. She is encouraging parents to ready to their kids every day from an early age, preparing them for success in school.

"Reading with your children is a fun family activity that will help young learners develop the language skills they need to succeed in kindergarten and throughout their entire school career," Fallin said.

Neuroscientists report that 90 percent of brain development occurs before a child enters kindergarten, and 30 percent of Oklahoma's kindergarten students are not performing at the kindergarten grade level.

Dr. Robert Block, pediatrician and child abuse expert, read to kids at Crosstown Learning Center in Tulsa to mark the weeklong event.
