ASHER, Oklahoma – Families in the law enforcement community are trying to cope with the deaths of two Pottawatomie County deputies killed when their cruiser collided with a truck on SH 39 near Asher Friday evening.

Sheriff Mike Booth said a deputy never forgets the faces, families and victims of car accidents. They train and respond to every accident. The worst case scenario for first responders? Finding fellow law enforcement members involved. It's like finding family.

"We know when we put this badge on that anything can happen," said Pottawatomie County Sheriff Mike Booth.

Reserve deputies 45-year-old Mike Roberts and 56-year-old Tim Lowry, two of Booth's best, were out serving a warrant to keep the community safe.

"Nothing they could have done to prevent this and it was God's way of saying, ‘It's time to come home,'" Booth said.

He said the hardest part of any deadly accident is telling family, and now it's different.

"This loss is just…is just worse."

Now the department is focused on the families the deputies left behind.

Booth said it's not unusual for the close-knit sheriff's office staff and families to meet up for cook-outs on weekends or drop by after work. This time they are gathering to help two families forever changed.

"When a guy is in a profession as long as they were and committed as much as they were, the wives, the kids, they become part of your lives too," Booth said.

Lives that must now go on with the help of everyone in the Pott County family.

"We're watching out for each other," Booth said.

Calls from sheriffs offices and police departments across Oklahoma have been pouring in, all asking how they can help.

Funeral services for Roberts have been scheduled at 2 p.m. Tuesday, October 4, at the First Baptist Church in St. Louis. Services for Lowry will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday, October 5, at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Konawa.
