Windy, a Little Cooler.

Gusty NW winds tonight and Thursday will bring clear skies and cooler nights, but our days will still be warmer than normal.

As feared, the showers and storms over the last 24 hours were pretty much a hit or miss proposition, and mostly a miss as far as any really useful rainfall is concerned. The map on the right, courtesy of the OK Mesonet, shows the rainfall totals over the last 24 hours and only a few spotty locations actually got enough rain to do much good. There remains a slight possibility that storms could redevelop over the extreme eastern counties later this afternoon and if so, they have the potential to become marginally severe with hail up to an inch in diameter and localized, damaging winds.

The actual cool front will be arriving during the afternoon/early night time hours shifting our winds from a SW or W component to a NW component and becoming rather gusty. However, the air behind this boundary is not all that cool, although it is drier and that means clear skies for the next few days. That also means cooler nights but our daytime temperatures will still be above normal.

The gusty NW winds for Thursday will be followed by a return to southerly winds on Friday which will become gusty again for Saturday and Sunday. That means temperatures will be quite warm for this time of year over this coming weekend.

Another, stronger front is still scheduled to arrive early next week. As is usually the case, the timing is questionable at this long of a time range, but currently it appears that it should be arriving late Monday or Monday night. That should result in another relatively warm day for Monday followed by a more significant cool-down for the middle of next week. The pattern aloft looks to be more amplified by then with a stronger northerly flow aloft bringing much cooler conditions further southward.

However, this pattern also is not very supportive of much more in the way of any significant rainfall. There will be a chance of a few showers or storms with the cold front arriving late Monday. Other than that, it looks pretty much like a dry forecast not only for the rest of this week but quite possibly much of the following week as well.

So, stay tuned and check back for updates.
