TULSA, Oklahoma -- Most of northern Oklahoma is under a freeze warning early Thursday morning. This follows a cool fall Wednesday afternoon with highs in the upper 50s to lower 60s, according to News On 6 Meteorologist Alan Crone.

The freeze warning is in effect from 1 to 9 a.m. Thursday for counties including Tulsa, Wagoner, Rogers, Mayes, Delaware, Okmulgee, Craig, Nowata, Cherokee and Adair.

Some of the lowest lying areas of northeast Oklahoma and northwest Arkansas may see temperatures fall as low as the mid 20s, according to the National Weather Service.

The advisory warns residents to bring small pets inside for the night and make sure outside animals have warm, dry shelter with plenty of food and water. Potted plants should also be brought indoors, and small trees or other tender vegetation should be protected.

A painter's tarp or a lightweight plastic tarp works best to help capture some of the ground heat. Buckets and even dry, dead leaves work, too, according to "Dirt Dude" Steve Smith with Southwood Landscape & Nursery.

Gardeners will probably need to tack down the tarps to keep them from blowing away. Be sure to use some sort of support to keep the cover from crushing your plants.

The rest of the week's forecast will remain mild with afternoon highs moving back into the lower 70s Saturday and Sunday with partly cloudy conditions.

"A weak upper level system will brush the state this weekend, and a few showers or storms can't be ruled out," Alan Crone said.

Weather data continues to suggest "another major front Tuesday or Wednesday of next week with more cold air and another chance of showers or storms," he said.

"This would also bring more cold morning lows back to the region Wednesday and Thursday morning of next week."
