BOSTON -- CBS News is reporting that Matt Damon and Ben Affleck are teaming up to make a film about the life of Whitey Bulger.

Damon says he will star as Bulger, while Affleck will co-star and direct the film. "Boardwalk Empire's" Terence Winter will write the script.

Bugler was arrested in California in June.  According to the FBI, he led the Boston-based Winter Hill Gang, which controlled some of the illegal drug trade and underground gambling in the Boston area.

The 81-year-old currently faces a series of federal charges including murder, conspiracy to commit murder, narcotics distribution, extortion and money laundering.

He's also suspected of killing Tulsa businessman Roger Wheeler in 1981 at Southern Hills Country Club.

No word on whether the Tulsa murder will be mentioned in the film.

The website Deadline Hollywood says the movie will cover Bulger's youth and his time behind bars in Alcatraz, and also include his life as a mob boss while serving as an FBI informant.

"Matt and I have been looking for something to do together for some time," Ben Affleck told Deadline Hollywood. "We've heard about Whitey Bulger since we were kids, and we are excited by the prospect of putting it on screen."

This will be their first movie together since 1997's "Good Will Hunting."
