State Legislator Sets Earthquake Meeting

OKLAHOMA CITY -

Oklahoma's recent earthquakes did more than shake foundations, they pushed one lawmaker into action.

Mike Shelton represents House District 97, which includes eastern Oklahoma county. That area has seen its share of earthquakes over the past year.

"As often as we have had earthquakes I think it's definitely worth a conversation," said Shelton. "Let's empower the community."

Shelton plans on having an earthquake preparedness meeting in January, shortly before the next legislative session. He hopes the meeting, which will include state, city, and county agencies goes a long way toward establishing a standardized earthquake emergency response.

Shelton is also concerned that Oklahoma schools have a plan of action on the level of tornado and fire drills.

"I think it's just come to a lot of people's minds that we're on a fault line," Shelton said. "We typically think of California as the place where earthquakes happen, but apparently we're not immune."
