Elderly Man Rescued From Burning Tulsa Home

An elderly man is recuperating after being rescued from a house fire in Tulsa Friday evening.

Tulsa District Chief Michael Atchison said firefighters were called the 5900 block of E. 27th Place on a possible house fire with a victim trapped inside. First responders saw no smoke or flames, but the front door felt hot to the touch. They forced entry into the home and found a small fire on the floor and an elderly man in a wheelchair.

"Firefighter Clayton Newell found the home owner, on the kitchen floor next to his wheel chair. Clayton Newell with the help of his crew lifted him back into the wheelchair and removed the homeowner from the house," said TFD Public Information Officer Stan May.

Firefighters were able to extinguish the fire quickly.

The man had no visible burns, but appeared to be suffering from smoke inhalation. He was transported to the hospital in unknown condition. Firefighters said it appeared he would recover.

The victim's name has not been released. Damage was estimated at $15,000. There has been no determination of the cause of the fire at this time.

The man and his wife both live in the home, but the woman was not home at the time. The home was damaged by smoke and is not livable at this time.

The couple owns another home in Claremore.

A neighbor who routinely checks on the couple left the residence shortly before the fire occurred.
