Oklahoma's Own News 9 is on the move once again, and our next Road Trip Oklahoma stop is in Chickasha on Friday, December 2nd.
Chickasha's vision is to be a proactive business organization with an influential voice dedicated to economic success and an abundant quality of life. The town's establishment occurred in 1892 when the Rock Island Railroad stopped its tracks there for several months. Since then, the town has grown into a population of over 16,000 people. The University of Science and Arts of Oklahoma is located in Chickasha and known for its national academic ranking. It is also the only public liberal arts college in Oklahoma.
Running between Thanksgiving and New Years, Chickasha's Festival of Light has become an award winning display with over 4 million lights. The event brings in approximately 300,000 people and is produced mainly through charitable contributions and volunteer efforts. One of the current major projects underway in Chickasha is the construction of a new Early Education Center, a 20-million dollar job, which is expected to be finished in August 2012. In addition, the original Chickasha Hotel that was built in 1902 is undergoing a 6-million dollar historic renovation project.
Some famous people from Chickasha include: San Francisco 49ers defensive tackle Sam Rayburn, artist Leon Polk Smith, actor Dudley Dickerson and children's book author Bill Wallace.
