Virginia Company Wants To Sell Its Tahlequah Plant

A Virginia-based company says it plans to sell its Tahlequah plant it idled in 2009. American Woodmark Corporation says the move is part of a series of cost-saving steps the cabinetmaker is making because of the continuing housing slump.

In 2009, a slumping housing market dragged down demand for new cabinets. So it shuttered its seven-year-old Tahlequah plant.

"Since the Tahlequah Plant was idled in 2009, we have continued to press forward with improvements in our manufacturing value streams. As a result, the effective capacity potential of our remaining four assembly plants has increased to the point that the Tahlequah plant will not be needed in any projected market or volume scenario. Accordingly, we will pursue an orderly sale of the property," said Kent Guichard, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer.

In 2009, American Woodmark said work at the Tahlequah facility would be suspended until market conditions improve.
