OSU Softball Starts Off Season With Two Wins

HOUSTON – This Cowgirl softball team is entering the season with some of the highest expectations in program history.

And if the first day is any indication, they are off to a good start.

Oklahoma State picked up a pair of wins on Friday in the first day of the Houston Hilton Classic.

It took the Cowgirls a little while to get going, however, with a four-hour rain delay backing the games up.

But after they finally got going, the first game belonged to OSU pitcher Kat Espinosa. She picked up the second no-hitter of her career with a 2-0 shutout of North Texas.

She finished the game with six strikeouts and three walks.

The Cowgirl offense took a little while to catch up, unable to get on the board until the sixth inning.

In the top of the sixth, senior Kelsey Anchors reached base and was bunted over to second by Chelsea Garcia.

Tamara Brown followed that up with a single to score Anchors.

The second run of the day came in the seventh when Anchors returned the favor, picking up an RBI single to score Sammy Jo Diffendaffer.

The second game of the day took a bit of a different pace than the first in a 5-0 win against Sam Houston State.

Oklahoma State wasted no time in this one going to work at the plate, as Brown brought Ari Morrison home in the first inning for an early lead.

Freshman Taylor Woodall picked up the first hit of her career in the fourth inning and it was a big one. She homered over the left field wall with two runners on to drive the lead to 4-0.

Brown picked up another RBI later in the game and Simone Freeman recorded the complete game shutout and struck out a career high 15.

OSU (2-0) will continue its run through the Classic tomorrow when it takes onTexas A&M-Corpus Christi at 11 a.m. and Houston at 1 p.m.
