Much of Green Country is under a winter weather advisory Sunday night through Monday evening. Light to moderate snow is expected – plus what News On 6 meteorologist Dick Faurot calls a "mixed bag" of sleet and rain.

The advisory is in effect for several Northeastern Oklahoma counties including Tulsa, Okmulgee, Rogers, Wagoner, Mayes, Delaware and Creek counties. Several Arkansas counties are also included.

The snow should start falling a little before midnight Sunday, just in time to usher in the work week.

A freezing rain mixture is predicted to fall south of a Tulsa-Ft. Smith line, according to the National Weather Service. Estimates call for snow and sleet accumulations of 1 to 3 inches.

"The disturbance in the upper atmosphere that is heading our way from the southern Rockies does not appear to be overly impressive," Faurot said in his latest Weather Blog.

"However, it will have enough punch to produce a round of wintry precipitation starting in the western part of the state by evening and spreading our way overnight."

Faurot says it appears the storm will be a rare event.

Drivers are urged to use extra caution if driving late Sunday night into Monday morning in the areas under the advisory.

Saturday was the coldest day of the winter so far.

"Very few locations even made it above the freezing mark," Faurot said. Highs are expected to reach above freezing on Sunday.

"All indications point to snow developing around midnight Sunday night and continuing into the morning hours of Monday. Temperatures Monday morning will start off near freezing so some travel issues can be expected," Faurot said.

Travelers are reminded to pack a roadside emergency kit. Get other winter weather safety tips. Pet owners should bring their animals inside or make sure they have shelter, water and food.

As temperatures warm up during the day, the precipitation should change over to sleet and rain before ending as a light drizzle by late afternoon.

"That will be followed by much milder conditions for the rest of the week and even another chance of rain by late Wednesday or that night," he said.
