The Logan County Sheriff's Department is in the process of removing more than a dozen abused horses from a property in rural Guthrie.

According to Chief Deputy Rob Groseclose, a tip came in alerting the sheriff's department about horse abuse located at a property 1/2 a mile north of Seward Road on Hiwassee. When deputies arrived at the properly over the weekend, they discovered approximately 105 horses that appeared to be malnourished. Detectives also saw several skeletal remains on the property.

"They [deputies] saw horses that appeared to be emaciated and not doing very well," said Chief Deputy Groseclose. "There's no two ways about it, it's abuse."

Groseclose said on Sunday, February 12, a veterinarian met with detectives at the property and inspected each horse individually. The vet determined 15 of the horses needed immediate attention.

"Its difficult to hear about things like that," Groseclose said. "You figure if someone is going to take on the ownership of 105 horses they would have the means or ability or desire to take care of those animals."

Detectives are still trying to determine who owns the horses and why they are there. In the meantime, an affidavit was filed to seize the 15 horses that are considered to be in grave danger. A judge granted the order on Monday, February 13.

Groseclose said one of horses didn't make it and died sometime overnight. So, detectives are now working with Blazes Equine Rescue to remove the now 14 horses that need immediate care. The fate of the remaining 91 horses is unclear, but they will be monitored while the investigation continues.
