Investigators found a .22 caliber rifle near the skeletal remains.
OTTAWA COUNTY, Oklahoma -
Two Ottawa County men discovered skeletal remains as they walked through a wooded area near Cardin Friday evening.
Investigators responding to the scene found not only the remains of a man but also a .22 caliber rifle, according to Detective Derek Derwin with the Ottawa County Sheriff's Office.
"The skull appeared to have suffered a gunshot wound," Derwin said in a release.
On Saturday morning, an anthropologist with the State of Oklahoma Medical Examiner's Office processed the scene, learning that the remains belong to a Caucasian or Hispanic male between the ages of 18 and 35.
"It is believed that the remains have been at the scene for 6 months to two years," Derwin said.
