With those storm systems approaching, the Tulsa Red Cross is mobilizing volunteers to help people get ready for severe weather season.

They stormed the dorms at University of Tulsa and gave tips to the students.

They have a game plan.

They have the manpower.

And they're on a mission to cover every inch of campus.

About 30 Red Cross volunteers are armed with boxes, each one filled with goody bags.

One bag for each dorm room, holding pamplets on how to handle a disaster like a fire or tornado on campus.

"Especially last year with the disasters that we saw in Alabama when it hit through the campus there," Volunteer Kate Clark. "A lot of students didn't know what to do. They may be from a part of the country where they're not used to tornaodes."

The Red Cross says it's important to target students who are living on their own for the first time.

"We don't expect that every student is going to read and learn everything that's in this information but even if they just keep it handy and take a few of those steps beforehand," said Donita Quesnel of the Tulsa Red Cross.

Speaking of steps, it takes a lot of them.

Sacrificing time and energy on a perfect spring day to help people before the weather turns and disaster strikes.

"You never know. And severe weather, especially, is something you think will never impact you and then the next thing you know, all of a sudden, your home is gone," Clark said.

Here's the Red Cross's advice specifically for people living in multi-story dorms or apartments:

  • Make friends with people living on the bottom floor.
  • Make a disaster plan with those neighbors so the minute a tornado warning is issued, everyone knows where to go.
  • Have a disaster plan
