A one-vehicle crash in McCurtain County claimed the life of a Broken Bow man early Sunday morning, according to the Oklahoma Highway Patrol.

It happened at 4:38 a.m. Sunday, about one mile north and three and half miles west of Broken Bow, on a county road in McCurtain County.

Michael Shelton, 36, was pronounced dead at the scene due to massive head injuries, according to the OHP collision report.

A 2002 Dodge pickup driven by Shelton was westbound on the county road when it ran off the roadway to the left for an unknown reason, overcorrected, and ran off the roadway to the right.

The pickup then struck a ditch and rolled one and one-quarter times. Shelton was thrown out of the vehicle through the driver's side window, according to the OHP.

Troopers said they did smell an odor of alcoholic beverage on Shelton. The cause of the collision is still under investigation.
