The family of a woman who was the victim of a home invasion earlier this week talked to News On 6 Thursday.

Police shot and killed the suspect, ex-con Phillip Doll, when he refused their orders. The victim's nephew said that quick decision saved his aunt's life.

Tuesday evening started like any normal one for Chad Miller and his wife.

"The IPad went off and I got up and read the alert on the news story. Didn't really think much about it," Chad Miller said.

Then phones started ringing letting them know that their 65-year-old aunt had been the victim of a home invasion on East 36th street.

"You kind of go into this panic mode. Is she okay? Is she at the hospital? We didn't know," Miller said.

The attacker was shot and killed by police. On the same day of the crime, Doll was also named the person of interest in the death of his 22-year-old live-in girlfriend Natalie Davis.

After learning this information, Miller says there's no telling what could have happened if police didn't show up when they did.

"Their actions were very swift and they literally ensured that our loved one is with us today and to find out the circumstances around the suspect makes us even more thankful that the outcome is the way it was," he said.

Miller says his aunt is doing well and is in good spirits.

"She wanted to say, number one, thank you from the bottom of her heart to the police officers that showed up and helped her," Miller said.

The victim's grandson was the one who initially realized something was wrong and called 911. He's also been shaken up by this ordeal, but the close-knit family is helping him cope.

"He's with another member of our family. They're taking care of him and I believe he's doing okay as well," Miller said.

In the eight years the family has lived in the neighborhood, they say they've never had any problems and they've always felt very safe.  "That's one of the things that's been taken from her is just that security and that safeness," Chad Miller said.
