According to multiple reports, the men's and women's basketball teams at the University of Baylor could be facing major NCAA sanctions due to illegal phone calls and text messages to recruits.

ESPN.com reports that the possible sanctions stem from an investigation that uncovered more than 1,200 impermissible text messages and phone calls over a span of 29 months.

The report outlines that men's head coach Scott Drew and women's head coach Kim Mulkey, as well as their assistants, were involved in illegal phone calls and texts. In addition the summary disposition from the NCAA enforcement staff describes those improper contacts as "major violations," because of the frequency with which they occurred.

The disposition states that the men's and women's teams combined sent 738 illegal text messages and made 528 impermissible phone calls since the probe began in 2008.

As a result of probe in 2008, Baylor already instated a handful of self-imposed penalties and ESPN.com reports that the university could announce as early as this week whether additional penalties will be enforced.

ESPN's report indicates that the self-imposed penalties for the men's team include one less scholarship for this past season and for the 2012-1213 team. In addition, there is a ban on recruiting phone calls from Jan. 1 to Feb. 29 of this past season for head coach Scott Drew and assistant Jerome Tang as well as a reduction of official-visits from 12 to seven for the 2012-13 recruiting class.

The same report states that Mulkey is not allowed to recruit off-campus this summer, and two scholarships were taken away from last season. Additionally, assistant Damion McKinney is banned from making calls since the start of the year, through May 1.

According to the NCAA's report, most of the impermissible texts/phone calls occurred in 2007 and 2008.

The NCAA infractions committee could accept the University's self-imposed penalties, or it could add additional penalties like further scholarship reduction or suspensions for one or both teams for a certain number of games next season.

The news of the possible sanctions comes just more than one week after Mulkey and the Bears won the 2012 NCAA women's National Championship, becoming the first team in NCAA history to go 40-0 on the season.

The men's team won a school-record 30 games this season and reached the NCAA regional finals.

NCAA spokeswoman Stacey Osburn told The Associated Press that the NCAA would not release the report or comment.
