He's been to the moon and back, and Wednesday he shared his story with Tulsans.

Gene Cernan made a special stop at the Tulsa Air and Space Museum. Forty years ago Cernan became the very last man to walk on the moon.  He was the commander of Apollo 17, which landed on the moon in December or 1972.

He says we should really treasure our museum.

"It's an inspiration to the young kids, the dreamers," Cernan said. "I've said the dreamers of today are going to be the doers of tomorrow. We need more dreamers because we need more doers. The inspiration at a place this provides these young kids is an educational trip of its own."

Cernan said he's disappointed we haven't been back to the moon or started a trip to Mars.

Cernan was a U.S. Navy fighter pilot when he was selected to be an astronaut in 1963.
