Happy Mother's Day. Despite the mostly cloudy skies and a chance of rain, it still looks like a pretty nice day as the clouds and a light northerly wind will keep temperatures below normal this afternoon. Daytime highs are expected to be in the mid 70s and 78 is normal for this time of year. A few showers will also be bubbling up this afternoon with the chances of any one location receiving measurable rainfall on the order of 20%. There is also a little more instability available so there may even be some thunder with a few of those afternoon showers.

Even fewer showers or possible thunder are expected for Monday and little or no mention of rain for the rest of the coming week and through the coming weekend. As you can see from the 10 day rainfall map on the right, courtesy of the OK Mesonet, some locations have received little or no rainfall during that period and prospects for the coming week are in the slim to none category. Keep in mind, May is normally our wettest month of the year. Just hope it does not try to catch up all at once at the end of the month.

Those light northerly winds for today will continue through Monday which together with partly cloudy to mostly cloudy skies will keep temperatures on the mild side for another day. After that, things start warming up. Light and variable winds on Tuesday will be followed by a SE wind on Wednesday and brisk southerly winds for the rest of the week and the weekend. As the surface high pressure ridge that is west of us slides on over us Tuesday and then on to the east, our winds will respond accordingly.

Meanwhile, aloft a broad trough will gradually be replaced by an upper level ridge. This is a pretty stable, warm pattern for us and that is the reason for the warming trend along with little or no mention of rain as the week wears on. There are some indications of a weak front making it down this way early that next week and that will likely be our next, best chance for rain.

In the meantime, stay tuned and check back for updates.
