TULSA, Oklahoma -

One of the nation's most prestigious equine events is happening right now in Tulsa.

After taking a year off, cowboys and cowgirls from all over the country are back in Green Country for the Breeder's Invitational. And this year's show is breaking records.

The Breeder's Invitational is back and it's bigger and better than ever.

"This year's purse is the largest yet," horse trainer Chubby Turner said. "They're gonna pay out over $2.5 million."

Chubby Turner is a world champion cutter. He's also one of the older Cowboys in the competition - he got roped into to the sport some 40 years back.

"In all the years I've been in this, I've seen them get in and get out, but they always come back," Chubby said. "Nobody quits forever. Once you've done it, it's a little addicting."

The horse and its rider are being judged on how well they can separate one cow from its herd and keep it away from a certain amount of time.

It's a tricky game, especially because once a calf has been paired up with a cutting horse, it never forgets.

"You'll see these guys down here with pen and paper," Chubby said. "They'll be studying each and every cow and they'll be writing down any marking that they can remember."

There are more riders at this year's competition than ever before. That's good news, because the show was cancelled last year due to a highly contagious equine virus.

You can enjoy more of the Breeder's Invitational out at Expo Square through May 26th.
