TULSA, Oklahoma -

The Tulsa region's unemployment rate dropped significantly in April, falling to 4.9 percent, according to the latest data from from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics.

The unemployment rate decreased from 5.3 percent in March and is considerably lower than the 6.2 percent rate the region had at the same time last year.

In April, roughly 2,000 jobs were filled, and 2,000 who were unemployed took jobs, the Tulsa Metro Chamber reported Wednesday.

"This is the lowest monthly rate since January 2009," Tulsa Metro Chamber economist Bob Ball said. "This news, coupled with the April gain year-over-year of 2.63 percent in non-farm employment, is the best it can be. This drop in the unemployment rate occurred for all the right reasons."

Oklahoma City also saw a drop in unemployment.
