Tulsa Better Business Bureau: Beware Of Tempting Teen Job Ads

Posted: Updated:

TULSA, Oklahoma -

The Better Business Bureau is warning Oklahoma teens and college students of job scams this summer. They say many students have little to no previous work experience and are tempted to apply for jobs that require little work experience but offer big bucks.

Chances are you've seen plenty of teens looking for that perfect summer job and maybe even carrying the classified ads section of the newspaper in the process.

The Better Business Bureau says everyday you can see ads in newspapers and posted online making promises of making hundreds of dollars a day. Or maybe you've seen or heard of this one, where an ad claims employees made $10,000 or more over a summer.

While all of this sound like a good deal, the BBB says these ads are actually intended to get your personal information or even get money from job seekers.

Here are a few red flags to be on the lookout for:

First, if someone promises you a lot of money for a job that doesn't seem like it requires a lot of effort or skill.

Second, if you have to make up-front payments to participate in a business opportunity, this is a red flag. If you're asked to wire money to somebody beware. Once you do this that money is gone forever. The Better Business Bureau says wire transfers of money are a legitimate service but scam artists ask for you to wire money usually outside of the country.

Third, if you feel like somebody's trying to make you hurry up and sign up, that's a bad sign. Take your time to check everything out.

And finally, ask for complete information in writing about the job. Look over the document and make sure it answers all of your questions. If the person or business won't give you details, walk away.
