A Sand Springs church canceled Sunday services and a summer camp this week over fears of a possible bacterial meningitis case; however, the child in question does not have that disease.

Chad Stewart, senior pastor at The Word of Life Church at 1402 North 81st Street West Avenue, told the media Monday afternoon that the child is doing "extremely well."

The church had posted a notice on its web site Sunday informing parents about the possible meningitis case.

"We do not take the safety of our congregation lightly," Stewart said at a Monday afternoon news conference.

There is no need for anyone who attends the church or may have been exposed to the child to receive shots or testing, he said.

The child's parents called the church to ask for prayer and to inform them that doctors thought the child's illness could be due to bacterial meningitis.

The nature of the child's illness has not been diagnosed, to Stewart's knowledge.
