Vance Air Force Base Road Trip

News 9 is hitting the highway again to visit one of our favorite places. On June 29th, Road Trip Oklahoma will return to Enid, OK.

A flourishing city, Enid is the largest retail centers in the Northwest, serving a customer base of more than 200,000 in Northwest Oklahoma and Southwest Kansas.

The city is also home to Farmland and Johnson Grain Company, which is why Enid has been dubbed the "wheat capital" of Oklahoma. Moreover, it has the third largest grain storage capacity in the world.

Vance Air Force Base will be the major stop for News 9. Vance AFB is a Joint Pilot Training Base for students from Air Force, Navy, and Marine Corps, where they train approximately 400 students each year. Named after Lt. Col. Leon Robert Vance Jr., he posthumously received the Metal of Honor for his service during WWII. Road Trip Oklahoma will celebrate with Vance as they will hold their bi-yearly graduation for their trainees on the 29th.

The busiest runway in the U.S. Air Force last quarter, Vance also trains international students from countries such as Afghanistan and Nigeria. Very much a part of the Enid community as well, the Air Force base is frequently, warmly named Enid, America. The base also hosts a yearly children's summer camp called Camp Tomahawk, a camp for underprivileged kids who would normally be unable to attend.

Enid has been home to Leona Mitchell, a world-class soprano, who debuted at the San Francisco Symphony and used her voice in various television, film, and album pieces. Michael Hedges, included in "25 guitarists who rocked the world," won a Grammy in 1998 after he died. Also, Stacy Prammanasudh is a professional golfer for the LPGA Tour.
