Presidential Committee Endorses Four-Team Playoff

The BCS Presidential Oversight Committee officially endorsed a four-team playoff model Tuesday, a 12-year agreement, set to go into effect and replace the Bowl Championship Series beginning in 2014.

Under the new system, a committed would select the top four teams in the nation to appear in semifinal games at existing bowl sites, to be played Dec. 31 and Jan. 1. The winners would advance to a championship game 10 days later, played in the city with the highest bid, similar to the Super Bowl.

Sites for the semifinal games would rotate between the six existing BCS Bowl sites – the Rose Bowl, Orange Bowl, Fiesta Bowl and Sugar Bowl are definite – with two more locations to be added to the rotation in the future. The Cotton Bowl, currently played at Cowboys' Stadium in Arlington, Texas, is widely considered to gain one of the rotating sites to host a semifinal game.

The details of the selection committee have yet to be determined, but speculation has been made that it would be larger than the 10-person committee used for the NCAA Basketball Tournament. Additionally, a revenue sharing model for this new system has yet to be determined.
