The Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation (OSBI) is investigating a fatal officer-involved shooting after a confrontation early Wednesday morning outside the police department.

Family members attempted to take 34-year-old Benjamin Whiteshield of Thomas to the hospital because he was acting delusional. When that didn't work, they drove him to the police department just after midnight on June 27.

Police said Whiteshield grabbed a large crescent wrench, got out of the car, and disappeared. Police searched the area, and one officer found him on the north side of the building. Police said Whiteshield was still holding the wrench and wouldn't put it down. The officer pulled his gun and fired, hitting Whiteshield in the mouth.

Police said Whiteshield then ran into the lobby of the police department. Several officers had to subdue a struggling Whiteshield while emergency medical technicians tried to treat him. They were finally able to load him into an ambulance. He was pronounced dead after arriving at a hospital in Clinton. The State Medical Examiner is performing an autopsy on Whiteshield's body.

The officer who shot Whiteshield is on routine, paid administrative leave while the department investigates. The Custer County district attorney will determine if the shooting was justified.
