TULSA, Oklahoma -

A piece of Oklahoma history is getting some well-deserved recognition.

Tulsa's Whittier Square District, around 1st Street and Lewis, is now listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

Being added to the national registry will not only bring recognition, but also opportunities for economic development.

Executive Director of Kendall Whittier Main Street, Nancy Phelps said, "On a daily basis, it seems like our phones are ringing with interest of wanting to come into the neighborhood, so I think after today's announcement it's something that will catapult this area even more so."

The neighborhood along Route 66 was home to Tulsa's first suburban shopping center back in the 1920s.
