Crews, including a helicopter, responded Wednesday afternoon to an incident on a bridge on U.S. Highway 97.

John Maurice Perry, 86, of Sand Springs died on the scene.

Sand Springs Police said Perry was struck by a vehicle after he stopped to secure the hood of his car, which had flipped up while he was driving.

Perry stopped and exited the car. The car behind his stopped, but a truck behind the second car failed to stop in time and ran into the back of it. The collision pushed the vehicle into Perry.

The accident occurred on the south end of the bridge, on the northbound side.

Highway 97 was closed to all traffic, while a helicopter arrived and landed on the bridge around 5 p.m., to transport Perry to a Tulsa hospital.

However, Perry was not transported to the hospital. He died on the scene and was released to the medical examiner.

One lane of traffic on the northbound side of the bridge was opened about an hour after the accident.
