TULSA, Oklahoma -

A former Oklahoma air force captain was honored here on the home front Thursday.

Bartis Kent received the Air Medal for his actions 60 years ago during the Korean War.

Captain Kent was a flight surgeon, but twice during his tour, he voluntarily performed combat duty in a fighter jet, to learn about the psychological aspects flying during wartime can have on service members.

Military leaders say Kent's actions were heroic, but he discharged before the medal could ever be presented.
