Oklahoma County prosecutors have charged a woman with child abuse for allegedly beating her 3-year-old daughter with an extension cord.

The girl's father took the toddler to the hospital on July 5, the day after 28-year-old Nortesha Harmon returned the child to his home. The man said the two don't have a formal custody agreement, but the child lives with him and Harmon spends time with her whenever she wants.

The father noticed bruises and welts on the girl and asked Harmon what happened. According to court documents, Harmon said she "whooped" the child with an extension cord after the little girl went into the refrigerator to get a drink. Harmon said she'd warned the girl she could not have anything to drink after 7 p.m., so she punished the child when she disobeyed.

The child was treated at Children's Hospital, and police launched an investigation. Based on their findings, Harmon was charged with one count of child abuse.
