Grass Fire Near Glencoe In Payne County Extinguished; Residents Allowed Back Home

Posted: Updated:
GLENCOE, Oklahoma -

Fire crews have extinguished a wildfire that broke out southwest of Glencoe in Payne County Saturday afternoon.

All roads are back open, according to officials. However, the intersection of Richmond and Union is still shut down due to a downed power line. Residents are advised to avoid this area.

All 600 Glencoe residents evacuated from their homes Saturday night are being allowed back into their homes.

An estimated 15 to 20 homes were destroyed by fire.

Crews were able to extinguish the blaze Sunday morning, but are still monitoring hot spots.

The area of town which suffered from the fire is located about a mile south of town on Yost Rd. and VFW in an area known as Tower Acres.

Fire officials evacuated Glencoe residents and anyone within a five-mile radius of the town.

Authorities suggested evacuees flee toward the north on state highway 108 and then east on highway 64 toward Pawnee. Evacuees can also go to the Morrison Event Center in Morrison on the west side of town just off state highway 64. They are open and ready to take people in.

The Red Cross has set up a shelter at First United Methodist Church at 800 6th Street in Pawnee.
