Tulsans now have a new tool to help stop bullying. It's a website created just for Green Country families.
It's called Prevent Bullying Tulsa, and it launched Monday. Several area non-profit agencies and groups have been working on the site since April.
"We've learned that bullying has increased with frequency and intensity over the past two decades, so bullying is indeed changing in the nature and the type of bullying that is involved," said Steve Hahn of Community Service Education, Parent Child Center.
"Not to mention we didn't deal with cyber bullying 10 years ago, but today our kids are."
The website offers resources that are available local for parents and kids.
Here's an example of their tips for working with your child's school if he or she is being bullied:
- Keep a written record of all bullying incidents that your child reports to you. Record the names of the children involved, where and when the bullying occurred, and what happened.
- Immediately ask to meet with your child's classroom teacher and explain your concerns in a friendly, non-confrontational way.
- Ask the teacher about his or her observations.
- If you are concerned about how your child is coping with the stress of being bullied, ask to speak with your child's guidance counselor or other school-based mental health professional.
- Set up a follow-up appointment with the teacher to discuss progress.
- If there is no improvement after reporting bullying to your child's teacher, speak with the school principal.
- Keep notes from your meetings with teachers and administrators.

Groups participating in the coalition include The Parent Child Center of Tulsa, Family & Children's Services, Tulsa Public Schools, Youth Services of Tulsa, Mental Health Association in Tulsa, Oklahomans for Equality, PFLAG Tulsa, Oklahoma Center for Community and Justice, 211, Community Service Council and the YMCA of Greater Tulsa.
