The Oklahoma Highway Patrol says a man drowned Friday on Mt. Fork River near Presbyterian Falls in McCurtain County.

Gary D. Burton, 64, was kayaking about 3 miles east of Broken Bow when his kayak flipped over and he fell into the water. Troopers say Burton was wearing a personal flotation device.

Witnesses saw Burton swimming toward the kayak, but he suddenly stopped swimming. The witnesses managed to get to Burton and pull him to land. They tried to revive him using CPR but Burton never regained consciousness.

A state medical examiner will perform an autopsy on Burton to determine if a medical issue contributed to his death.
