For the first time, instead of a prayer, an atheist delivered an invocation to open Tulsa City Council's meeting Thursday night.

Dan Nerren told the council it's important to respect each other's rights and that together we can make Tulsa a better place for everyone.

"We must remember that in the face of adversity we need not look above for answers, but instead recognize the proven potential within ourselves and in each other to overcome any challenges we face," Nerren said.

Nerren said atheists haven't felt a part of the community, because of they don't believe in a God.

But he said being allowed to deliver Thursday night's invocation before the council provides of sense of belonging.
