Tulsa kept things interesting throughout but didn't have enough in the tank to pull off its second major upset in the past few days.

Abe Matamoros scored a goal for Tulsa but the Golden Hurricane lost a closely-contested 2-1 game to fourth-ranked South Florida on Sunday night in the Hurricane Classic in Tulsa. TU upset No. 3 New Mexico on Friday.

"After the first 20 minutes, I thought we started to gain control of the game," coach Tom McIntosh said. "Other than the counter-attack in the second half, I thought we controlled a lot of the play and I thought we performed really well. We had a couple defensive lapses and they punished us for them. The margin of victory is slim when you are playing these types of teams, and we will just have to keep growing as a group. The subs came on and played exceptionally well and we showed our depth today."

Roberto Alterio put the Bulls on the board at the 51:45 mark when he knocked in a goal from two yards out. TU's Matamoros countered with a goal 20 minutes later as he evened up the score from 45 yards out on the right side.

But in the 80th minute, Lucas Baldwin gave USF the go-ahead goal as he drilled in a penalty kick for the game-winner.

South Florida had a 14-9 lead in shots, including a 9-5 advantage in shots on goal. USF also had a 9-5 lead in corner kicks.

Bradley Bourgeois had a team-best two shots, while seven others had a shot. Mark Pais logged all 90 minutes in goal and picked up seven saves.

Tulsa plays Sept. 7 against UCLA at 6:30 p.m.
