Friday Morning Update

Posted: Updated:

A strong cold front will enter the state today and bring a chance of shower and storms to the region.  A few may be strong to severe this afternoon with damaging winds and hail the main threat.   Temperatures before the front arrives will move into the 90s this afternoon with some triple digits likely along and south of I-40.  The boundary will cross the northeastern Ok area between 2pm and 4pm bringing very strong winds from the north in the 20 to 40 mph range and the chance for some scattered storms.  The National Weather Service has issued a Wind Advisory for portion of the area due to the expected strong north winds later this afternoon.

Before the front arrives, we may see some scattered showers or storms at times this morning across northern OK and southern Kansas.  These are not expected to be severe, but some gusty winds and lightning would be possible.

After the front passes your area, temperatures will be dropping into the 70s and 80s behind the boundary by late this afternoon creating a nice preview of fall like weather for the weekend.  Friday night football games will be windy and cool with game time temps starting into the 70s and finishing in the 60s!  There will be a slight chance of some scattered showers and storms for portions of football games across east central and southeastern OK this evening.   Games in northeastern OK may see a few storms before games begin, but those storms will more than likely be sliding southeastward by early evening.

Reading's tomorrow morning will be in the mid-50s with clear sky.  The afternoon highs should top out in the upper 70s across northern OK and the lower 80s across southeastern OK along with a nice northeast breeze in the 10 to 15 mph range.  Sunday morning we may have a slight breeze from the southwest that could keep the readings from dropping as low as they could go, but I'll keep us in the lower to mid-50s Sunday morning before seeing the temps move into the mid-80s Sunday afternoon with plenty of sunshine.

The pattern will support a return to above normal temps next week with highs in the lower or mid 90s by midweek with morning lows in the 60s to near 70.  South winds will return in the 10 to 20 mph range by the middle of the week as another system begins to draw closer to the region by Wednesday or Thursday.  GFS is about one day faster compared to the EURO, but we'll keep a slight chance of showers and storms in the forecast for late Thursday or better yet Friday.
