Golden Hurricane Finishes Third In Iowa

TU men's golfers finish third in Iowa tournament.

The Tulsa men's golf team opened the season with a third-place performance at the Golfweek Conference Challenge, while senior Chris Worrell placed second overall at the par-72 Spirit Hollow Golf Course.

The Hurricane turned in the second-best round of the day on Tuesday with a one-under par 287 for an overall three-over par score of 867 for the tournament.

Missouri held onto the lead from the first round to claim the team title with a seven-under par 857 total, followed by Wake Forest with a one-over par 865. Tulsa's 867 was 10 shots better than fourth-place Iowa. Ball State rounded out the top-five with a score of 878.

Tulsa's Worrell began the final round with a birdie and eagle on the first two holes, but gave back a stroke on the par-3 third hole. Worrell had bogeys on holes 8th and 12th, before knocking in a birdie putt on hole 17 to finish at one-under par 71 for his second-place performance. Worrell closed out the tournament with a seven-under par score of 209 for his career-best second-place performance.

Newcomer Logan McCracken finished in seventh place after turning in his second straight round of 70 on Tuesday.

Matt Mabrey had his best round of the tournament with a one-under par 73 to finish with a five-over par 221 score. Colton Staggs and Mark Mumford tied for 57th place with scores of 232.  

Tulsa will be back in action on Monday at the Shoal Creek Invitational in Birmingham, Ala. The 54-hole tournaments will conclude on Tuesday.
